From the Roof of the World to Turfan
So, there we were...the place was like no other place we
had ever seen before. It was almost as though we had landed in a
different time. As we gazed from the roof of the bus which careened
along the edge of a precipice, stretched out before us for a quarter of
a mile was a camel caravan straight out of the Arabian Nights. The
men wore turbans, beards, bandoliers, and carried rifles. The women
wore long black and crimson dresses, veils, and were heavily laden with
silver jewelry. Babies were strapped to the tops of many of the camels
along with the rest of the nomad's village. The mountains of the
Hindu Kush rose abruptly behind the caravan...
We stood on Kala Pattar, a spur of Pumori, at over 18,000
feet, and gazed across the Khumbu glacier below us. There, rising another
10,000 to 11,000 feet above us was the roof of the world. Everest, Nuptse,
and Lhotse stood in regal splendor in the thin air. Everest had, as it
often does, a cap of cloud clinging to its peak. It lifted and the black
pyramid of a summit shown through and we witnessed the highest point on
the planet. As we looked around, we were awed by the sheer immensity of
the Himalayan Mountains we could see from our vantage point. We did, indeed,
feel as though we were standing on the roof of the world.
Just two of literally hundreds of stories associated with
each of the countries listed below. While each story cannot be recounted
here, over the next few months we will try to scan in and link as many
of the most memorable images captured when we travelled in each country
as we can.
